DESCRIPTION:**This course is now full with a long waiting list.** If you d
o not want to miss your chance to be part of the next session and remain i
nformed about all training activities at SIB\, we highly recommend you to
keep an eye on our list of [upcoming events](https://www.sib.swiss/trainin
g/upcoming-training-courses) and subscribe to our courses [mailing list](h
ttps://lists.sib.swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses) here (if you haven't done
so already).\n\n# Overview\nR is a complete\, flexible and open source sy
stem for statistical analysis and graphics\, which has become a tool of ch
oice for biologists and biomedical scientists who need to analyse and visu
alise large amounts of data. Due to its popularity\, R is continuously upd
ated and extended with the latest libraries for data manipulation\, modell
ing and visualisation. \n\nThis course will give an introduction to R and
Rstudio (an integrated development environment for R) in an interactive ma
nner. Participants will receive example data sets to practise data manipul
ation\, graphical exploration and statistical hypothesis testing.\n\n# Aud
ience\nThis "First Steps with R" two-day course is addressed to beginners
wanting to become familiar with the R syntax\, environment\, and the most
common commands to start using R to explore and interpret their data.\n\n#
Learning objectives\nAt the end of the course\, participants should be co
mfortable with the R environment and be able to read\, understand and writ
e R commands\, allowing them to implement and interpret a workflow for the
ir data analysis:\n* interact with the R environment\n* import data\, expl
ore it and summarise it\n* explore data with graphs\n* perform simple stat
 istical tests\n\n\n# Prerequisites\n#### ***Knowledge / competencies***\nA
s it is a course for beginners\, no background in R or any programming lan
guage is required. However\, you are encouraged to go through some of the
 R documentation available [here](http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/r-r
elease/R-intro.html).\n\nPlease also note this course is NOT a training on
statistics but rather a training on how to use R to perform different tas
 ks\, statistics being one of them.\n#### ***Technical***\nA Wi-Fi enabled
laptop with latest [R](https://www.r-project.org/) and [RStudio](https://w
 ww.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/#download) versions installed. Th
ere will be access to the eduroam and guest network. \n\n# Application\n\n
