 escription:\n\nThis course provides an introduction to High-Performance Co
 mputing (HPC) for researchers in the life sciences\, using ARCHER2 as a pl
 atform for hands-on training exercises.\n\n\n\nThe course is organised and
  funded by BioExcel - the Centre of Excellence for Computational Biomolecu
 lar Research (http://bioexcel.eu) and PRACE\, and delivered in collaborati
 on with ARCHER2 - the UK national supercomputing service (https://www.arch
 er2.ac.uk/).\n\nOverview\n\nHigh-performance computing (HPC) is a fundamen
 tal technology used to solve a wide range of scientific research problems.
  Many important challenges in science such as protein folding\, the search
  for the Higgs boson\, drug discovery\, and the development of nuclear fus
 ion all depend on simulations\, models and analyses run on HPC facilities 
 to make progress.\n\nThis course introduces HPC to life science researcher
 s\, focusing on the aspects that are most important for those new to this 
 technology to understand. It will help you judge how HPC can best benefit 
 your research\, and equip you to go on to successfully and efficiently mak
 e use of HPC facilities in future. The course will cover basic concepts in
  HPC hardware\, software\, user environments\, filesystems\, and programmi
 ng models. It also provides an opportunity to gain hands-on practical expe
 rience and assistance using an HPC system (ARCHER2\, the UK national super
 computing service) through examples drawn from the life sciences\, such as
  biomolecular simulation.\n\nLearning outcomes\n\nOn completion of the cou
 rse\, we expect that attendees will understand and be able to explain:\n\n

 The UK &amp\; EU HPC landscape - HPC facilities available to researchers\n
 	HPC hardware - Building blocks and architectures\n	Parallel computing - P
 rogramming models and implementations\n	Using HPC systems\n	\n		Access\n		
 Batch schedulers &amp\; resource allocation\n		Running jobs\n		Dealing wit
 h errors\n		Compiling code\n		Using libraries\n		Performance\n	\n	\n	The F
 uture of HPC\n\n\nPre-requisites\n\nThis course follows on naturally from 
 the BioExcel Summer School on Foundation skills for HPC in computational b
 iomolecular research (http://bioexcel.eu/events/bioexcel-summer-school/)\n
 \nFamiliarity with basic Linux commands (at the level of being able to nav
 igate a file system) is recommended. You may find a Linux ‘cheat sheet
 ’ such as http://www.archer.ac.uk/documentation/user-guide/linux.php#qui
 ckref useful if you are less familiar with Linux.\n\nNo programming skills
