DESCRIPTION:**The videos of the lecture - parts [1](https://youtu.be/Vhm9WK
 q7LM8) and [2](https://youtu.be/IXQ1rooBtT8) - are now on YouTube.**\n\n#
Overview\n\nThe word glycoprotein is often used yet the “glyco” part i
s hardly ever described. This is the case\, for instance\, with viruses in
which surface spike proteins are abbreviated GP\, numbered HIV GP120\, bu
t remain depicted as a smooth fist-like structure. In reality\, glycan mol
ecules decorate a broad variety of surface or secreted proteins and the li
terature is filled with unnoticed references focusing on the “glyco” p
art.\n\nThis course is an opportunity to update and extend your knowledge
of glycoproteins through the use of bioinformatics resources collectively
called “glycoinformatics”. We will provide an overview of the challeng
ing questions raised by the study of glycans as non-template driven molecu
les and the solutions that are currently proposed to store\, search\, anal
yse and visualise the effect(s) of protein glycosylation on protein struct
ure\, function(s) and interactions. We will present several glycomics reso
urces on [Expasy](https://www.expasy.org/)\, the Swiss Bioinformatics Port
al\, and review recent developments.\n\n# Audience\n\nThis course is targe
ting any life scientist\, from academia or industry: biologists\, biochemi
sts\, from master students to advanced researchers.\n\n# Learning objectiv
es\n\nAt the end of the course\, participants will be able to:\n* give exa
mples illustrating the importance of glycosylation\n* check for known glyc
ans when studying glycoproteins\n* appreciate the notion of glycome \n* es
tablish the relationship defined by glycans between glycoproteins and glyc
 an-binding proteins\n\n\n# Prerequisites\n#### Knowledge / competencies\n\
nThis course is designed for beginners in glycoinformatics or glycomics.\n
 \nExperience in using [UniProt](https://www.uniprot.org/) is required. **P
lease view any of the following videos prior to the lecture** depending on
your interest so that any questions you have can be raised during the Q&a
mp\;A session following the recap at the beginning of the lecture:\n\n* [C
rash course in glycoscience (Introduction to glycoinformatics\, 1/7)](http
s://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfDn98SQb-E) - Serge Perez tells you all you e
ver wanted to know about glycoscience and never dared ask.\n* [Introductio
 n to Glycoinformatics (1 of 4)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIknaxr1Ll
 Y) - This lecture describes the glycoinformatics landscape - collaborative
  efforts world-wide in defining standards\, modeling the data\, resources\
, tools – and introduces the interacting resources of the Glyspace Allia
 nce [PMC6992953](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6992953/).\n
 * [Introduction to Glycoinformatics (2 of 4)](https://www.youtube.com/watc
h?v=L9Zn-ji4RYY) - This lecture introduces the topic of glycoproteomics an
d reviews the tools for understanding the corresponding data\, with a part
icular focus on the GlyConnect platform.\n* [Introduction to Glycoinformat
 ics (3 of 4)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEwsLmxaZsg) - This lecture
focuses on particular glycan datasets such as Sars-Cov2 glycans or human m
ilk oligosaccharides.\n* [Introduction to Glycoinformatics (4 of 4)](https
://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VdXKPOyTE4) - This lecture introduces the topi
c of glycan recognition and glycan-binding and reviews he tools for unders
tanding the corresponding data\, with a particular focus on the UniLectin
platform.\n\n#### Technical\n\nThis course will be **streamed**\, you are
thus required to have your own computer with an internet connection.\n\n#
 Application\n\n\n\nAttendance is free-of-charge\, however **registration i
s mandatory** (use the Apply button below).\n\nThere is no limit on the nu
mber of attendees. All those who have applied by **May 25\, 2022** will re
ceive the information for remotely connecting to the lecture by email.\n\n
\n# Venue and Time\n\nThese lecture will be streamed using Zoom. The lectu
re will start at 15:00 CET and end at 17:00 CET.\n\nPrecise information wi
ll be provided to the participants before the course.\n\n\n# Additional i
nformation\nCoordination: Monique Zahn\, SIB Training Group.\n\nYou are we
lcome to register to the SIB courses mailing list to be informed of all fu
ture courses and workshops\, as well as all important deadlines using the
 form [here](https://lists.sib.swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nSIB abid
