DESCRIPTION:## Overview\n\nFor the last few years\, research in DNA and RNA
has been dominated by short-read sequencing. Although this has revolution
ized the way we answer biological questions\, it has its limitations. One
important limitation is read length. The invention of high-throughput long
-read sequencing has enabled us to solve questions on genome assembly\, ha
plotyping\, structural variation and alternative splicing. In this course\
, the participant will get acquainted with the major long-read sequencing
technologies (PacBio SMRT and Oxford Nanopore Technology)\, and get experi
ence with hands-on work involving long-read data.\nThe training materials
for this course are in its dedicated [GitHub](https://sib-swiss.github.io/
 NGS-longreads-training/) page.\nThe course includes a guest lecture from [
 Dr. Alban Ramette](https://www.ifik.unibe.ch/research/bioinformatics__bios
 tatistics___alban_ramette/index_eng.html) and [Dr. Pamela Nicholson](https
 ://www.ngs.unibe.ch/about_us/person/dr_nicholson_pamela/).\n\n## Audience\
n\nThis course is designed for PhD students\, postdoctoral and other resea
rchers in the life sciences from both academia and industry who are workin
g with or interested in working with long-read data.\n\n## Learning outcom
es\n\nAt the end of the course\, the participants should be able to:\n\n*
**Understand** the basics behind PacBio SMRT sequencing and Oxford Nanopor
e Technology sequencing\n* **Use** the command line to perform quality con
trol and read alignment of long-read sequencing data\n* **Perform** differ
ential isoform expression analysis or a repeat expansion analysis based on
  long-read sequencing data\n\n## Prerequisites\n\n### Knowledge / competen
cies\n\nThis course is part of the [Omics Data Analysis learning path](htt
 ps://www.sib.swiss/training/learning-paths?path=omics-data-analysis). To g
et the most out of this course\, you should meet the learning outcomes of
 [UNIX Fundamentals](https://www.sib.swiss/training/course/2012_UNIXF). \n\
nIn case of doubt\, evaluate your **UNIX skills** [here](https://docs.goog
 le.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd2BEWeOKLbIRGBT_aDEGPce1FOaVYBbhBiaqcaHoBKNB27MQ/
viewform?usp=sf_link).\n\n### Technical\n\nYou are required to bring your
own laptop. Software installation instructions will be communicated before
  the course.\n\n## Schedule – CE(S)T time zone\n\nSee [Course schedule](
 https://sib-swiss.github.io/NGS-longreads-training/latest/course_schedule/
)\n\n## Application\n\nThe registration fees for academics are **200 CHF**
and **1000 CHF** for for-profit companies.\n\nWhile participants are regi
stered on a first come\, first served basis\, exceptions may be made to en
sure diversity and equity\, which may increase the time before your regist
ration is confirmed.\n\nApplications will close on **12.02.2026** or as so
on as the places will be filled up. Cancellation after **12.02.2026** will
not be reimbursed. Please note that participation in SIB courses is subje
 ct to our [general conditions](https://www.sib.swiss/legal-documents).\n\n
You will be informed by email of your registration confirmation. Upon rece
ption of the confirmation email\, participants will be asked to confirm at
tendance by paying the fees within **5 working days**.\n\n## Venue and Tim
e\n\nThis course will take place at the University of Bern.\n\nIt will sta
rt at 9:15 CET and end around 17:15 CET.\n\nPrecise information will be pr
ovided to the registered participants in due time. \n\n## Additional info
rmation\n\nCoordination: Valeria Di Cola\, SIB Training group.\n\nA **Cert
ificate of Attendance** will be sent provided you were present at the cour
se\, whereas a **Certificate of Achievement** recommending 0.5 ECTS will b
e sent provided you passed the exam.\n\nYou are welcome to register to the
SIB courses mailing list to be informed of all future courses and worksho
ps\, as well as all important deadlines using the form [here](https://list
s.sib.swiss/mailman/listinfo/courses).\n\nSIB abides by the [ELIXIR Code o
 f Conduct](https://elixir-europe.org/events/code-of-conduct). Participants
of SIB courses are also required to abide by the same code.\n\nFor more i
 nformation\, please contact [training@sib.swiss](mailto://training@sib.swi
